Collection and Recycling Arrangements in Spain
Under the Spanish Royal Decree 208/2005 on Electrical and Electronic Equipment and Management of its Waste which came into force on August 13th 2005, for equipment that you buy from Zimmer after August 13th 2005, Zimmer is required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) that your new purchase replaces, on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. The old equipment that your new purchase from Zimmer replaces is referred to as Historic WEEE.
Under the Decree, Zimmer is also required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of any new electrical and electronic equipment that you buy from Zimmer after August 13th 2005, when that new equipment eventually becomes waste. This is referred to as new WEEE.
Zimmer is an environmentally responsible company. We have decided to provide WEEE collection and recycling arrangements for all Zimmer electrical and electronic equipment, regardless of when it was purchased and when it became waste.
Our approach to share the new environmental costs are:
- You pay for transportation of your WEEE to Zimmers’s appointed recycler in Spain
- Zimmer pays for the costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the WEEE to meet the targets set by the Spanish Decree
- Zimmer pays for the costs of data management and reporting to the General Directorate of Quality and Environmental Assessment of the Ministry of the Environment to demonstrate compliance with all administrative requirements of the Spanish Decree
Zimmer has established a recycling contract with the European Advanced Recycling Network (EARN) and will cover any costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the equipment on arrival at the EARN facility in Spain. All Historic and New WEEE that arises from the purchase of Zimmer products is classed as non-hazardous waste.
It is your responsibility to arrange and pay for costs of collection and transportation to EARN. Under Spanish waste management procedures, you are free to use any carrier you wish to collect and transport non-hazardous WEEE to the EARN recycler, providing the weight of equipment to be transported is less than 1,000 kg.
Customers sending medical electrical and electronic equipment for recycling are advised that all returned items must be certified as clean and free from infectious materials. A complete decontamination must be performed on all equipment suspected of being infected. Failure to carry out decontamination of this equipment will mean the EARN recycling facility in your country will not be able to accept the equipment you send to them for recycling.
Zimmer recommends that customers follow an appropriate local decontamination procedure for equipment suspected of being infected. The Certification of Decontamination should be signed off and attached along with the downloadable recycling label to the outside of the box for transport. The Certificate of Decontamination for Zimmer customers can be downloaded by clicking on the link below:
